My grandmother, Mirta Yanes, came to the United States in 1958 in search for the American Dream. Mirta, my grandmother in my mothers side of the family, is the matriarch of our family, a title always deemed to a man on the father's side of onces family. Mirtha and a cousin were the first in our family to come to the U.S. They moved to the New York in search of work. After a year of living in N.Y. my grandmother move to Iceland, Columbia, and back to Cuba until she returned on January 6, 1961. In that summer she brought her Husband and only daughter to the U.S. and began to what was her life goal to bring her family from a communist country to the land of the free. In the 1980 Mariel Boat Lift, Mirta was able to bring many of her brothers from Cuba, but it wasn't until 1995 that she reached her goal and finally had all of her 5 brothers and to the U.S. Mirtha was a successful Hair Stylist for many years until her retirement in 1999. Today she owns many properties and has succesfully put her daughter and grandson through college and can truly say she achieve the American Dream.
